Summer in Chicago goes by FAST. One minute it’s the Fourth of July, the next is Labor Day weekend – and we get storms, tornadoes (and even gust storms and wildfire smoke?!) in between. Nevertheless, the end of August and early September tends to be the sweet spot – people want to make the most out of their last nice days and get some things checked off their summer bucket list. So if you’ve been wanting to host a gathering this summer and have waited, now is the perfect time.
Ready to host an event that people will love? Here’s our advice!

Pick a setting that fits the group. Backyard, rooftop, patio, park – the choice is all yours! Just remember that the weather can be unpredictable, so have a plan B in mind in case it rains.
Keep the food simple. There’s nothing worse than spending your own party in the kitchen. Pick things you can make ahead of time, or that guests can serve themselves: a good salad, sandwiches, something off the grill, a few dips, a dessert that doesn’t need last-minute work. A drink station is going to save you time and effort as well. Prepare a signature cocktail or mocktail (or both!), have some mixers, ice, or even simpler: canned drinks! And people will be ready to serve themselves all night.

Set the mood without stressing about it. A tablecloth, some flowers, and a candle or two are enough. If the party runs into the evening, don’t forget some string lights! The sun starts hiding earlier every day at this time of summer, so they’re always smart to bring along. Also – good music goes a long way! Ask people for recommendations, and make a playlist that fits the vibe for everyone to enjoy.

Give people something to do. Conversations usually lead the flow of these gatherings, but having at least one fun activity can make people get more relaxed – especially if not everyone knows each other. We’ve all felt that way at some parties. Lawn games, a deck of cards, or fun card games like “We’re Not Really Strangers,” “Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza,” or a classic round of “UNO” can really get the conversation flowing.

Most importantly – be present! We know, you want everything to be perfect. But trust us, your guests care more about enjoying your company than seeing you stressing out about the food or drinks. Have fun and enjoy the last few days of summer!
